Focal is a leader in the development of algorithms and human computer interface technology to help operators effectively identify and assist at-risk gamblers.
For three decades, Focal Research has been working with government, industry, regulators and public health providers around the world to make gambling safer for players and operators. Conducting ground-breaking research Focal is recognized internationally for safer gambling solutions through the development of player risk identification models, responsible gambling evaluation, prevention strategies, and player protection.
Focal started modelling player gambling behaviour in 1998 developing the first commercial risk detection algorithms using player loyalty data in 2005. Since then, Focal has continued to advance development in this area sharing our findings in peer reviewed journals and reports. Focal’s experience and ongoing research in prevention and risk management includes consulting with gambling stakeholders globally and presenting at conferences around the world.
From 2014 – 2019, Focal applied this knowledge in developing the ALeRT BETTOR Protection System as part of an international collaborative research project involving 9 operators from three different countries, regulators, and public health providers with co-funding from the National Research Council of Canada. ALeRT is based on peer reviewed research and industry testing, offering gambling operators a complete and practical tool to reduce and prevent gambling risk and harm for online and in-person customers. ALeRT offers broad coverage for a full suite of products including pokies, video lottery, slots, electronic roulette, table games, sports betting, racing and others.
