18th International Conference on Gambling and Risk Taking | Presentations

The International Conference on Gambling and Risk Taking provides a platform for researchers, regulators, and treatment specialists to come together and discuss important topics surrounding safer gambling and player protection.

During this year’s conference, our team actively participated, sharing our latest research findings on risky play sessions and the impact of safer gambling interactions, moderating engaging panel discussions, and connecting with fellow stakeholders. Additionally, we addressed the issue of stigma prevailing in the industry, shedding light on the importance of creating a supportive and inclusive environment.

Presentations:

Affordability Models - Finding the Invisible At-Risk Player: Using technology to help identify customers spending beyond affordable limits

In this presentation, Tony Schellinck, CEO of Focal Research Consultants Limited, along with Tracy Schrans, President of Focal Research, discuss the issue of over-spending in gambling and the hidden problem gamblers known as the Over-Spenders. The talk emphasizes the importance of this topic for regulations and operator directives aimed at reaching and assisting individuals who spend excessively on gambling. They advocate for the use of sophisticated algorithms rather than relying solely on criteria like session length. They highlight the value of identifying these individuals by understanding their psychological profile and play behaviours, enabling effective interaction to create a safer gambling environment. Sophie Wang, Senior Analyst at Focal was a key contributor to the creation of this research.

Beyond Identification: Using technology to assist at-risk players - Evaluating the Impact of Staff Safer Gambling Interactions for Player Outcomes

In this presentation, Tracy Schrans, President of Focal Research, discusses how operators can utilize risk detection technology to reduce and prevent gambling risk and harm for their customers. The focus is on the results obtained from the UK Casino Trial of the ALeRT BETTOR Protection System. The evaluation of safer gambling interactions conducted by casino staff with Players of Interest identified by the ALeRT system is emphasized.

During the trial period from November 2018 to December 2019, over 2100 safer gambling customer interactions took place across 16 venues in the UK, involving 5 different casino operators. The findings revealed that effective customer action significantly influenced improved player outcomes. Following two or more interactions, there were significant reductions observed in various aspects of gambling behaviour, including speed of play, session length, frequency of play, and chasing losses. As a result, there were notable decreases in betting rates per session, monthly turnover, and time spent gambling, ultimately leading to a significant one-third reduction in losses.

Learn more about our Safer Gambling Solutions

ALeRT is a data-driven real-world solution to help prevent gambling risk and harm.

The system integrates corporate social responsibility best practices and technologies across a modern enterprise, helping move operators into an active prevention role. It does this by identifying at-risk players, supporting effective customer interactions, and evaluating the impact of such interactions in reducing customer risk and harm.

The ALeRT BETTOR Customer Care Training program is intended as an ancillary resource for gambling operators to use in addition to their own policies, practices and staff training.

This training program provides service staff with additional information and skill sets for undertaking effective customer interactions as part of normal customer care. This in turn helps gamblers make better decisions, making gambling safer for all those choosing to gamble.

Our Healthy Bottom Line brochures are helpful guides that provide insight into gambling risk, and harm and provide professional encouragement to safeguard your patrons from risky play patterns that may develop into long-term issues.

With six different brochures, each brochure is customized and branded for each operator to provide information that is relevant and meaningful to their customers. Materials are available in both print and digital formats.
