For over 20 years, Focal Research has been working with government, industry and regulators around the world to make gambling safer for players and operators. Piloting ground breaking research in area of gambling since 1998, Focal has evolved into a world leader in safer gambling and the development of player risk identification models and tools for risk management, prevention, and player protection.
Currently Focal is conducting research at over 150 casino and online gambling venues to identify at-risk gamblers among their clientele. Along with sets of customized algorithms, Focal has been developing customized Safer Gambling management systems that provide identification, profiling, and monitoring of players before and after interactions with the player. Focal’s ALeRT BETTOR Protection System provides impact reporting on the effectiveness of the system in aiding individual players, the player population as a whole, and in providing information used for conformity updates to regulators.
In 2005, Focal developed and tested the first commercial models using player loyalty data for detecting at-risk playing patterns for problem gambling. Additionally, the Focal team introduced custom designed Safer Gambling programming (Healthy Bottom Line and Healthy Choice programs) developing the first player risk identification measures to specifically assess risk for problem gambling in advance of problem development.

In addition to carrying out large scale gambling prevalence studies, Focal has evaluated gambling behaviour and risk involving large player datasets and panels throughout the world, participating in a series of internationally recognized studies evaluating the impact of safer gambling initiatives and programs.
